2014 Twenty-Eight Eighty Red Wine
Three Rhône varietals – Grenache, Syrah, and Petite Sirah — are grown in our “Backyard” Estate vineyard and provide a sense of place and passion. To complement our Estate grown field blend we work with McGah Vineyard Grenache in Rutherford, which provides lift and focus along with wonderful texture. Rounding the composition, Petite Sirah from Shypoke Vineyard in Calistoga brings concentration and inky depth.
The Rutherford Grenache leads the approach providing aromas of boysenberries, red pomegranate, raspberries and restrained white pepper that unify into pure bright fruit and plum blossom. Our Estate grown Grenache, Syrah and Petite Sirah are co-fermented and flood the mid-palate with berry compote and spice box. Inky Petite Sirah completes the composition with wide blue fruit and flavor density that persists. The texture and structure accelerates in the finish, softening and lengthening. 47% Petite Sirah, 44% Grenache, 9% Syrah
WINEMAKING NOTES The estate fruit was handpicked and co-fermented; 10% whole-cluster. Hand punch-downs added elegance while indigenous yeast preserved sense of place. Pressed to barrel for malolactic fermentation and aged in second turn French Oak, the wines were blended just before bottling.
